Dawn Newton has proven herself as a business leader and community builder that can work effectively with Edmonton City Council. Newton’s ability to navigate both the business and not for profit sectors, plus her experience in the community, give her a valuable set of skills. Dawn has a solid understanding of the issues Edmonton families and businesses are facing and a track record of action.
Newton built a career in public affairs working in the oil and gas sector and quickly made a name for herself as a strategic thinker - one who understands the larger picture and who can proactively manage complex issues.
As the senior manager of Community Affairs for TELUS Communications, Newton worked with the TELUS Edmonton Community Board and led TELUS’s investments into the community. She collaborated successfully with City of Edmonton administration to help TELUS launch a transformational $1 billion fibre optic project to modernize Edmonton’s internet infrastructure.
Community service is a central part of Newton’s life. She is the current Board Chair of the Zebra Child Protection Centre, and she mentors newcomer students at Norquest College. She has also given her time to the iHuman Youth Society, Junior Achievement, Ladies on the Green, Capital City Clean Up, Root for Trees, and Roots of Empathy.
Newton was an inaugural member of WAVE (Women’s Advocacy Voice of Edmonton), an advisory committee for Edmonton City Council. Newton successfully advocated for policy change on the issues of child care, diversity training for Council and employees, and safety on public transit.
